새의 성격은 왜 중요할까요?

오클랜드 대학교 부교수이자 생물학자인 크리스탈 케인은

To work out your personality type, you can take a test. To do the same for a bird, you might analyse its song.

That’s according to a study published today in Royal Society Open Science, which claims the complexity of a superb fairy-wren’s (Malurus cyaneus) “chatter” song reveals its personality.

Diane Colombelli-Négrel, a Flinders University behavioural ecologist who led the study, said both sexes could advertise their personality vocally.

While males might be able to show off their behaviour to a prospective mate, female personality displayed through song could serve another purpose.

“[For females] one function may be to advertise to potential intruders their personality and ability to fight or respond to intrusion,” Dr Colombelli-Négrel said.

Breaking down bird behaviour

“Personalities” in animals are defined as consistent differences in an individual’s behaviour compared to other members of its species.

These personalities are measured in five traits: activity, aggressiveness, boldness, exploration and sociability.

Scientists think long-term personality traits are locked in for superb fairy-wrens once they reach adulthood.

The new study examined two traits that were reliable indicators of their level of risk-taking: exploration and aggressiveness.

To do this, the researchers temporarily captured wild superb fairy-wrens and observed their behaviour in a cage.

Exploration, how much an animal explores a new environment, was measured by how often a wren visited different sections of a cage when captured short-term.

And researchers determined how aggressive a bird was by whether it attacked or ignored its image in a mirror.

They then compared the behaviours of 102 temporarily captured birds with their song complexity when in the wild.

The study focused on chatter songs, which are used by the birds when choosing a mate and defending territory (which can be up to two hectares).

Dr Colombelli-Négrel said birds with a more exploratory personality had more “elements” — which are akin to letters in our alphabet — to their songs.

Now compare that with a less exploratory bird.

Dr Colombelli-Négrel said more aggressive birds produced fewer “syllables” — strings of “letters” — in their song.

So basically, aggressive birds strung together simpler “words”, and their songs were often shorter.

Why is bird personality important?

Several studies of different bird species show aggressive natures can have benefits from nest competition in tree swallows to territorial defence in a species of sparrow.

Superb fairy-wrens that explored more were less likely to still be alive a year later than their timid counterparts.

So birds such as the superb fairy-wren may advertise aspects of their personality that could help their chicks succeed.

But it’s not yet settled whether female birds, which choose what male they mate with, make their breeding decision based on personality presented in song.

Dr Colombelli-Négrel said some female superb fairy-wrens liked to breed with personality types similar to theirs and others went for opposites.

Biologist Kristal Cain, a University of Auckland associate professor who wasn’t part of the study, said while the males might sing to attract a mate, a female’s song could serve a more important purpose.

“If females are paying attention to the complexity of other females songs, it might help them choose which females to challenge and where to try to carve out a territory,” Dr Cain said.

“Complex songs might also be important indicators of age — which in males is often reflective of their ability to hold a territory. The same might be true in females.”

Clearing up the nuances of personality displays through song will require further research. Dr Colombelli-Négrel said she also wanted to look at whether personalities in the fairy-wrens influenced who they spent time with between their parents, members of the same social group or other birds.

Ornithologist Mike Webster of Cornell University was not involved in the new research but thought it was “interesting”.

Professor Webster said few studies had explored the links between individual personalities and performative displays like songs.

“There is strong evidence that birds use song in choosing their mates.

“But the idea that a bird can use song to select a mate with a certain personality type, maybe a compatible one that would make a good partner, is a novel idea.

“In some ways it is not surprising that an animal’s personality comes through in its song performance — it certainly seems to in humans.”
