Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called on Russians to rally around President Vladimir Putin, after what he called an “armed mutiny” by the Wagner mercenary group.

Zakharova is the Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has also been briefed by Putin on the situation, according to his Telegram channel.

Britain’s defence ministry says the Russian state is facing its greatest security challenge of recent times.

“It is complete chaos with each side having significant arsenals of weapons and troops, so the next move will be interesting to see,” Lyons says.

He says there is potential for all-out civil war.

“All signs are that it is not yet a civil war, but certainly all signs are that is the way it is heading,” Lyons says.

Poland’s president has held consultations with the prime minister and defence ministry about the situation in Russia, he said, adding that Warsaw was monitoring the situation.

“In connection with the situation in Russia, this morning we held consultations with the prime minister and the ministry of defence, as well as with allies,” Andrzej Duda wrote on Twitter.

A Russian security source told Reuters on Saturday that Wagner Group mercenary fighters had taken control of all military facilities in the city of Voronezh, around 500 kilometres south of Moscow.

Rostov-on-Don isn’t often mentioned when we talk about the war in Ukraine, but it’s a crucial hub of military activity for Russia and that’s why Prigozhin likely chose it as his target.

It’s a relatively small city with a population of about 1 million and it’s just 130 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

If Russian troops want to cross into Mariupol or Crimea, they need to go through Rostov-on-Don.

It’s the headquarters of the Southern Military District (SMD), which Prigozhin now claims to be under his control.

Rostov-on-Don is also the command centre for the Russian Joint Group of Forces in Ukraine.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington DC-based think tank sums it up this way:

“Prigozhin views the Ministry of Defence in Rostov as the most viable target of a Wagner armed rebellion … Rostov-on-Don is a critical command and control membrane for the Russian army, and any threats to the Ministry of Defence’s presence are likely to have ramifications on some critical aspects of the war effort.”

The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has reached out to Wagner Group mercenaries telling them their safety is guaranteed, in a statement released on Saturday.

The defence ministry told Wagner Group fighters that they’d been “deceived and dragged into a criminal adventure” by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the ministry urged Wagner fighters to contact its representatives and those of law enforcement services, and promised to guarantee their security.
