Buckingham Palace has released the first official portrait of King Charles after his coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

King Charles is pictured in full regalia in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, wearing the Imperial State Crown, and is holding the Sovereign’s Orb and Sceptre with Cross.

He is seated on one of a pair of 1902 throne chairs that were made for the then-future King George V and Queen Mary for use at the coronation of King Edward VII.

These throne chairs were also used in the background of the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (who became the Queen Mother).

Four official photographs were released in total, including Queen Camilla in the Green Drawing Room wearing Queen Mary’s Crown and Robe of Estate.

A third photo shows the King and Queen, and a wider group picture with members of the working royal family in the Throne Room.

The photographs were taken on Saturday by royal photographer Hugo Burnand, who also took the couple’s wedding portrait in 2005.

Accompanying the photos is a statement by King Charles giving “sincere and heartfelt” thanks to everyone involved in his coronation weekend and said he and his wife, Camilla, would rededicate their lives to service as three days of celebrations drew to a close.

In an echo of his late mother Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee message last June, before she died three months later, Charles and Camilla reiterated their pledge to serve.

“My wife and I just wanted to share our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those who have helped to make this such a special occasion,” Charles said in a statement, paying tribute to those who made the weekend possible and those who joined in celebrations.

Prince Louis’s first royal engagement

Rounding off a long holiday weekend of street parties and celebrations, Monday saw thousands of organisations get together for a volunteering program.

The Prince and Princess of Wales took part in The Big Help Out by visiting a scout group in Slough, near Windsor, with their children.

Princess Catherine is president of the Scout Association.

It was the first royal engagement for their younger son, Louis, 5, who shovelled, pushed a wheelbarrow and even helped operate a digger, with supervision from his father.

Other members of the royal family volunteered at events around the country, as did Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and leader of the opposition Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer.

“On the weekend, I think no other country in the world could put on such a dazzling spectacle,” Mr Sunak said.

“It was deeply moving to be in the coronation service and incredibly uplifting, and it’s an experience I think that nobody will forget for the rest of their lives.”
