검찰에 따르면, 문 전 대표의 전 사위는 “항공업계 관련 경험이나 자격이 전혀 없음에도 불구하고” 저가 항공사인 타이 이스타항공의 전무이사로 임명되었습니다.

검찰은 이 사위가 “장기간 자리를 비우는 경우가 많았고… 직위에 걸맞은 업무를 제대로 수행하지 않았다”고 밝혔습니다.

검찰은 문 전 대표의 소속 정당 출신 전 국회의원이 사실상 지배하고 있던 이 항공사가 당시 대통령의 호의를 얻기 위해 문 전 대표의 사위에게 이 직책을 맡겼다고 밝혔습니다.

검찰은 2018년부터 2020년까지 항공사가 사위에게 지급한 급여 및 기타 금전적 혜택이 “적법한 급여 지급이 아닌 대통령에게 지급된 뇌물”로 확인됐다고 주장했습니다.

사위는 이후 문 대통령의 딸과 이혼했습니다.

South Korea’s former president Moon Jae-in has been indicted on corruption charges related to the employment of his former son-in-law at a Thai airline, prosecutors say.

Mr Moon was “indicted for corruption for receiving 217 million won ($236,000) in connection with facilitating the employment of his son-in-law at an airline,” the Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office said in a statement on Thursday.

Mr Moon, who served as president from 2017 to 2022, was known for pursuing engagement with North Korea.

According to prosecutors, Mr Moon’s former son-in-law was appointed managing director by low-cost airline Thai Eastar Jet, “despite lacking any relevant experience or qualifications in the airline industry”.

They said the son-in-law “frequently left his post for extended periods … and did not perform his duties in a manner befitting the position”.

The airline, which was effectively controlled by a former MP from Mr Moon’s party, had given Mr Moon’s son-in-law the job in a bid to win favours from the then-president, prosecutors said.

The prosecution alleged any salary and other financial benefits paid by the airline to the son-in-law between 2018 and 2020 “were confirmed as not legitimate salary payments, but bribes intended for the president”.

The son-in-law later divorced Mr Moon’s daughter.

Reuters said Mr Moon, Mr Lee and their legal representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

The announcement from Acting President Han Duck-soo comes four days after the Constitutional Court unanimously removed Yoon Suk Yeol from office.

Mr Yoon was formally stripped of office earlier this month after being impeached and suspended by politicians over his December 3 attempt to subvert civilian rule, which saw armed soldiers deployed to parliament.

He became South Korea’s first sitting head of state to be arrested in January in connection with the criminal case against him, although he was later released on procedural grounds.

Appearing in court on Monday, local time, for the second hearing of his criminal trial, the ex-president spoke for more than 90 minutes, denying he had committed insurrection.

If found guilty, Mr Yoon would become the third South Korean president to be found guilty of insurrection — after two military leaders in connection with a 1979 coup.

A snap presidential election has been set for June 3 to choose Mr Yoon’s successor.
