All emergency warnings in Queensland have been downgraded as the clean-up begins after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The Bremer River, at Ipswich west of Brisbane, peaked overnight below the major flood level, in a major relief for residents.

Water recedes at Laidley

Rick Schulz, 69, has lived in the Lockyer Valley all his life, but says this was his first encounter with flooding at Laidley.
He runs the town’s hub at the Baptist Church, which was lucky to stand strong as floodwaters rushed by.
“I’ve lived in the area always but just been here for the last 12 months, but I hear this wasn’t as big as previous floods,” he says.
“We saw it on [social media], the flooding down the main street. I was pretty worried for people in the flood’s path.
“It just avoided the top step here, and that’s about 600mm off the ground.”
Brisbane mayor calls on residents to join ‘ute army’ this weekend
“We know that in 2022 and 2011 it was the mud army, where that was the opportunity for people to help,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says.
“Because we haven’t seen the same level of mud come through, and the same level of damage that occurred in 2022 or 2011, people have the same desire to help and so this is about channeling it into a place where help is needed.
“Many people have more than they can fit in their green top bin or the boot of their car and there are plenty of utes out there and plenty of ute drivers who are keen to help.”
He says the council can connect people who need help with those that want to help.
“Going through local councillors we’re matching the need to where the support is and where the volunteers are and making that connection we can get things done,” Mr Schrinner says.
Free green waste disposal is currently available at the Chandler, Ferny Grove, Nudgee and Willawong resource recovery centres.
The council’s also opened two temporary green waste drop-off sites at the Mt Coot-tha carpark and White Hills Reserve.
Family ‘stuck in a standstill’ after house crushed

James Marshall says his family are lucky to be uninjured after a giant pine tree crashed through their living room on Saturday night, taking out parts of the ceiling and carport.
Heavy rainfall entered the home in the Moreton Bay suburb of Lawton through gaps in the roofing, causing water damage to the timber floors.
One car remains trapped under the tree and Mr Marshall says the family are yet to receive assistance to remove it.
Mr Marshall says he has been unable to work while the family is staying in a hotel.
“We’re kind of at a standstill until the tree can be removed and the power’s switched back on,” he says.
“We’re pretty down in the dumps. We feel pretty vulnerable.”

Oyster farmer reflects on loss of ‘cream’ of his crop

John Lindsay, owner of Lindsay’s Oysters, the last oyster grower on the Kalang River in Urunga, NSW, has revealed the impact of recent floods on his business.
Just a week before ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred hit, he’d inspected the oysters and found them to be “the plumpest ever for this part of the season”.
However, the storm caused the oysters to lose condition and begin spawning.
“Even if the river clears fast, I don’t see another harvest this season,” Mr Lindsay said.
The operation, which produces about 30,000 dozen oysters annually, was up to 25,000 dozen this season before the flood hit.
This setback has led to significant financial losses, with Mr Lindsay estimating a drop in trade worth between $60,000 and $80,000 and it will also mean casual staff won’t have employment for at least three weeks.
Despite these challenges, Mr Lindsay remains resilient after surviving previous floods during his 37 years as a producer.
“We’ve been pretty lucky really — we didn’t get a flood last year or 23, 21 and 22 weren’t real good — so we’ve had a good run but this last month would have been the cream to top it off,” he said.
Still, he’s taking it in stride.
“Can’t do much about it — that’s life.”

This old image of a Peter Dutton billboard surrounded by floodwaters in Brisbane has been doing the rounds on social media during the flood event.
ABC News Verify has confirmed the image is from flooding in 2022 — with the Opposition Leader running an advertisement on the billboard between February and June of that year.
We geolocated the billboard to the Brisbane suburb of Ferny Grove, and the billboard company confirmed when the political ad appeared.
The billboard was found next to Cedar Creek, which Brisbane City Council historical flood maps show was flooding in February 2022.
Some accounts posting the image in the last week have not declared the image is from a separate flood event.

“We certainly don’t want to see the sandbags thrown away and go into landfill,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says.
“Please use the sand on your garden.
“If you don’t have a garden, I am sure there is a local sporting club that might be able to use that sand for something.”
As for the bags themselves, Mr Schrinner says people should hang onto them as they can be used again — but make sure to keep them out of the sunlight.
“I wouldn’t want to see 470,000 bags thrown away, there is a future use for them and we always need to be ready,” he says.

The power is still out at Sharlene Notise’s place at Clear Mountain, north-west of Brisbane.
She’s not expecting electricity to be restored until March 15, so she’s at the laundromat to do several loads of washing.
“It’s pretty tough with an 18-month-old, just trying to juggle everything,” she says.
While there’s a bit of a mess at her place — “branches here, there and everywhere” — she’s relieved her house survived the wild weather.

Water to be released from Wivenhoe Dam from this evening
Seqwater says those releases aren’t expected to add to flooding downstream.
Flood releases from Somerset Dam into Wivenhoe Dam began on Monday and will likely continue until later this week, Seqwater says in a statement.
Twin Bridges, Savages Crossing, Burton’s Bridge and Colleges Crossing are already inundated.
Kholo Bridge is expected to be inundated from Lockyer Creek before Wivenhoe Dam releases.
These bridges will still be inundated when Wivenhoe Dam releases begin.
Mt Crosby Weir Bridge, Mt Crosby Vehicle Bridge or Geoff Fisher (Fernvale) Bridge are not affected at this time.

Tree blows over at farm, sends splinters 30 metres

John Van Zanten was woken by a crack when a tree blew over at his Maryborough farm and splintered into shards in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The nearby coastal town of Hervey Bay was flooded after 200mm of rain fell in two hours early on Sunday morning.
“About quarter past four in the early morning, I’ve heard the loudest noise,” he says.
“Because of the heavy rain, it was impossible to see, but it felt like it hit ground very close by, and by the time the sun came up, this tree had suddenly disappeared.
“It really shattered, I was quite surprised how far shards of log had been spat away, like 30 metres away, and it’s speared into the ground.”
Mr Van Zanten says his farm fared well under the deluge.
“All rain is always welcome. It definitely needs some more adjustment … that’s part of farming, isn’t it?
“You’ve always got to look at it as a learning lesson.”

Baby koalas rescued in wake of storm
Friends of the Koala says there are many koala joeys left vulnerable and in urgent need of rescue in the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Among them was little Koala called Milly (below) who was found in distress and was brought to the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital for care.

Dutton thanks critical workers for their efforts
Peter Dutton has thanked SES, councils and emergency service workers for their continuous efforts around the clock during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
“I think it’s important to point out the people we met with this morning and those that have been working in similar situations and disaster management centres around the state, they have saved lives over the course of the tropical cyclone and the weather pattern that followed since then.
“I think we really need to pay homage to them and say thank you very much for their sacrifice.
“In many cases, they left their own homes and families to provide support either in a voluntary capacity or incapacity which is above and beyond their paid position and that’s certainly the case here on the Gold Coast.”
He concludes by saying there is still a “big recovery period ahead for a lot of people”.

Gold Coast is ‘open for business’ and Easter holiday travel
Opposition leader Peter Dutton is speaking now and has asked travellers to consider the Gold Coast for their Easter holidays.
“One of the most important messages out of today is if you think about booking a holiday for Easter, then look to one of these regions including the Gold Coast that’s been affected by the cyclone,” he says.
“If you can get onto one of the websites, for Virgin or Qantas or whoever it might be, there will be packages available.
“For a tourism city like the Gold Coast, it’s important people hear the message that it’s really open for business again.”

Gold Coast beaches lose ’80 per cent’ of their sand to the ocean

Mayor Tom Tate says the city will repair its beaches before the Easter holidays.
“Eighty per cent of our beach is gone into the ocean, but there’s a solution for that,” he says.
He says staff are working to make the most heavily affected beaches safe.
Next, heavy machinery is scheduled to repair the vertical scarping, to give beachgoers easier access.
Finally, Mr Tate says a sand pumping barge is on the way to help repair the beaches.
