‘Better news’ than expected for Gold Coast, Acting Mayor says

What is a tropical low?
This morning Alfred was a tropical cyclone but before crossing the mainland the system was downgraded to a tropical low.
The BOM says the “key difference” between a tropical low and a tropical cyclone is wind speed.
“Tropical lows usually have lower wind speed than tropical cyclones but can still bring severe thunderstorms and lots of rain.
“Tropical lows are moderate-strength low pressure systems that occur in the tropics, often in the monsoon trough. In Australia, they happen in the northern tropical areas from October to April.
“While all tropical cyclones start as a tropical low, not all tropical lows become tropical cyclones.”

Wet weather isn’t stopping coffee lovers

Holly Maclellan is managing a long queue of coffee orders at Mudjimba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where Alfred is continuing to bring heavy rainfall.
“Everyone from the coast is down here and coming in for a coffee,” she said.
“Everywhere else is closed.”
Ms Maclellan said residents had seemed cheerful in recent days.
“Everyone is off work. It’s like school holidays again — enjoy the surf, enjoy the beach, get their coffees and hang out.”
“It’s a reminder of COVID, to be honest. Everyone is stuck at home going, ‘We’ll just go down the road.'”

Lismore levee now monitored closely by drones

The NSW SES has deployed drones to conduct aerial assessments of the Wilsons River in Lismore, around the southern levee.
Major flooding is forecast for Lismore where the Wilsons River is predicted to reach 10.6 metres — the exact same height as the levee protecting the CBD.
There are concerns over whether that levee will either overtop (overflow) or be broken.
At this stage, neither has happened, but the drones being used will assess whether the south levee, which is 9 metres high, is overtopping.
The most recent water heights, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, is 8.68 metres and rising above moderate flood levels of 7.20 metres.

Relief for holiday park residents

Residents of Darlington Beach, a resort and holiday park north of Coffs Harbour in NSW, were told to move to higher ground at 2am due to the risk of major flash flooding from the rising tide.
The threat didn’t eventuate, to the relief of residents such as retiree Ron Jacks and his wife, who had taken precautions earlier.
Their home and car were written off in the last flood event at Darlington Beach a few years ago.
Mr Jacks said they’d been camping in their motorhome at a nearby highway rest stop since Wednesday.
Mr Jacks was relieved to find their home at Darlington Beach undamaged this morning. However, he said they would keep camping on higher ground as the rain continued.
“They keep saying the worst is to come. We will move again and come back and hopefully everything is fine,” Mr Jacks said.

Iconic Byron Bay trees cut down for safety

Three iconic Norfolk Island pines on the Byron Bay waterfront were pre-emptively cut down yesterday afternoon because of fears for public safety.
“It’s a shame to see them go, but you can’t save them because they’ll kill someone,” Byron Bay resident Dave Challis said.
He was expecting the damage to the beachfront to be far worse when he visited this morning.
Mr Challis hasn’t had power or internet for at least 29 hours. His phone service has been patchy at best, but he says he is just going with the flow.
“You don’t worry about it. You can’t change it,” he said.
“What will be, will be.”

Massive area of concern for flooding in Queensland
Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology says that even though Alfred has been downgraded, there’s still a lot of rain and thunderstorm activity to come.
This will mean flash flooding as well as riverine flooding.
“Key areas of interest [are the] Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and pushing up towards Brisbane as the system gradually makes its way on shore and moving westward,” Ms Bradbury said.
“It is bringing in a lot of moisture and we expect to see some of those heavy falls still, particularly with any thunderstorms developing.”

Ex-TC Alfred has ‘stalled’ off Bribie Island
Alfred has been downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone.
It’s been hanging around Bribie Island, which is between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology gave an update on the location of the storm a few minutes ago:
“We have seen very little change in the position of the system through the course of Saturday.
[It’s] still lingering off Bribie Island, essentially stalled for the moment as an ex-tropical cyclone.
Here’s the latest map from the BOM’s Alfred tracking page, which was last updated at 10:35am AEST:

Concern about high tide in Murwillumbah this afternoon

‘Horrific’ night on the Tweed

NSW Tweed Heads resident Jake told the ABC that last night was one of the worst of his life.
“It’s horrific. Trees sideways. Horizontal rain. It’s the worst-case scenario you can get in the Tweed,” he said.
“Torrential rain and catastrophic winds. It’s nothing we’ve seen here in 30 years.
“You’d be absolutely ludicrous to go out in this wind.”

NBN says 110,000 services impacted in south-east Queensland
The National Broadband Network says 110,000 services have been impacted by ex-Cyclone Alfred in Queensland and 20,000 services in New South Wales.
Most of the impacts are related to power outages.
Services impacted by power outages are likely to be restored once mains power is back.

Looking to hit the surf this weekend?
Sunshine Coast beaches in south-east Queensland will remain closed today, but authorities are hopeful they’ll be able to re-open on Sunday.
Local chief lifeguard Trent Robinson says 20-knot onshore winds are possible later in the day and — combined with overcast and rainy conditions — it’s safest to keep the beaches closed.
Mr Robinson also warned of 2-metre sand cliffs, which have formed from Twin Waters to Peregian Beach.
“It only takes 2 or 3 metres of sand to collapse and people can find themselves in all sorts of situations,” he says.
Coastal erosion is also changing the landscape further south, where much of the sand along the popular Surfers Paradise beachfront has fallen away.

Major flooding possible along Bremer River, Qld

Forecast heavy to intense rainfall has the potential to cause dangerous and rapid river level rises along the Bremer River and Warrill Creek in Queensland today.
“The timing and location of the heaviest falls will depend on the track of Tropical Cyclone Alfred,” the BOM said.
An initial moderate flood warning has also been issued for the Lockyer and Laidley Creeks.

The worst is yet to come for parts of NSW
NSW’s disaster recovery envoy Tony Sheldon has been speaking to the ABC from Lismore.
He says everybody in the Northern Rivers and Tablelands should be on alert.
“At this point, we are expecting still the worst of the event to come.
“I do not want people to feel as if it didn’t happen yesterday, or the day before, that things are going OK.
“We still have a great deal of challenges.
“Within the next 36 hours, there is going to be further rain dumped from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and I am very, very mindful of the number of impacts happening right now.”

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred unlikely to reform

It is possible for ex-tropical cyclones to reform if they change direction and move back across warmer waters.
However, while ex-TC Alfred is heading north, Helen Reid from the Bureau of Meteorology says it’s unlikely to reform into a tropical cyclone.
“On this occasion, we are not expecting that to be the case. We are expecting that the remnants will stay overland and just bring a lot of rainfall to the land area,” she said.
“We aren’t expecting it to drift back over the water.”

‘Water coming through the walls’ in NSW town with most rainfall
Host of The Dorrigo Podcast Michael Zeens is busy at work with his squeegee while ankle-deep in water inside his radio studio.
“When you’re fighting mother nature, you’re basically fighting a losing battle there,” he said.
“We’ve got water coming through the walls.”
Dorrigo has received up to 800mm of rain in recent days and Mr Zeens says there is no sign of the rain stopping.
“It’s been absolutely hectic. It’s been torrential rain all week,” Mr Zeens said.
“There’s trees and debris everywhere. A lot of the bridges are underwater.”
Yet, he said, the community was as tough as ever.
His wife has been baking sourdoughs to share with the community.
“Everyone is digging in and helping each other out.”
