A visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to the Oval Office has ended abruptly after it descended into an ugly shouting match in front of the media with US President Trump telling his Ukrainian counterpart he is “gambling with World War III”.

The scenes have been described as deeply “embarrassing” by pundits and politician across America as the US support of Ukraine against the invading Russia appears to hang in the balance.

The visit by Zelenskiy was designed to help Ukraine convince the United States not to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine three years ago. But it did not go well.

The Ukrainian leader disagreed sharply with Trump and Vice President JD Vance over the conflict, underlining how the change of administration in Washington DC has undermined Ukraine’s attempts to maintain foreign support for its war effort.

As Vance touted diplomacy, Zelenskiy disagreed that Putin was a trustworthy actor in negotiations after previously breaking a ceasefire deal, and largely stayed calm while he was berated by Vance and Trump about his position in the war and not appearing grateful enough for US assistance.

“I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media. Right now, you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems … you should be thanking the president,” Vance said.

“Do you think that it’s respectful to come to the Oval Office of the United States of America and attack the administration is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?”

President Trump repeatedly told Zelenskiy he was “gambling with World War III”.

“The problem is, I’ve empowered you to be a tough guy, and I don’t think he’d be a tough guy without the United States and your people are very brave, but you’re either going to make a deal or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out. I don’t think it’s going to be pretty,” Trump told him at one point.

Trump claims Zelenskiy not ready for peace, deal not signed

Trump quickly took to Truth Social to accuse Zelenskiy of disrespecting the United States.

“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved,” he wrote, using an alternative spelling of the leader’s name.

“He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Zelenskiy left the White House early following the confrontation, without signing a much-vaunted deal between Ukraine and the United States over the joint development of natural resources.

US media reported that the leaders broke off their closed-door meeting and a joint press conference that had been scheduled was cancelled. Zelenskiy was then seen getting into a car parked in front of the West Wing and driving away.

Oval Office exchange labelled ’embarrassing’ and ‘rock bottom’

Many in the media as well as political opponents of Donald Trump naturally expressed dismay over the meeting, with many criticising the “bullying” tactics of Trump and his deputy.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer accused Trump and Vance of “doing Putin’s dirty work”.

Meanwhile geopolitical strategist Velina Tchakarova described it as “rock bottom” for Ukraine, saying the meeting couldn’t have gone worse from Ukraine’s perspective.

European leaders pledge ongoing support for Ukraine

Prime ministers, presidents, and foreign ministers across the continent issued statements or took to social platform X to express their support for Zelensky and Ukraine.

The strongest comments so far have come from French President Emmanuel Macron, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and the foreign minister from Estonia, which borders Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters: “We all were right to have helped Ukraine and sanctioned Russia three years ago, and to continue to do so.

“There’s an aggressor, which is Russia, and a people attacked, which is Ukraine,” he said.

“We must thank all those who helped and respect those who have been fighting since the beginning.”

Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also reiterated his country’s support for Zelenskiy and his countrymen and women.

“The only obstacle to peace is the decision by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to continue his war of aggression,” he said in a statement this morning. “If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no Ukraine. Estonia’s support for Ukraine remains unwavering. It is time for Europe to step up. We do not need to wait for something else to happen; Europe has enough resources, including Russia’s frozen assets, to enable Ukraine to continue fighting.”
